I’m new to this. What is RSS, and how do I get started?
RSS is a way to get automatic notifications whenever this website is updated. You can view these updates within a tool called an “RSS reader”. It’s a lot like receiving email… the updates come to you, rather than you having to remember to visit the web site.
Here’s how to do it: first, select an RSS reader, if you don’t already have one. This is free and takes about 5 minutes. Here are some options:
- Bloglines is a very popular web-based blog subscription service. Wikipedia has a much longer list of web-based readers here.
- Google, Yahoo! and MSN all offer RSS-ready personalized homepages. With this approach your personalized news feeds show up on your home page. You can find these services at Google (click on “Personalized Home”), Windows Live, and Yahoo! (click on “My Yahoo!”).
- There are also PC-based dedicated RSS reader applications. See a long list of PC-based readers here.
I recommend web-based readers such as Bloglines because they allow you to track your RSS feeds from any computer, just like Hotmail, Yahoo! mail or Gmail do for email. This makes it easy to read news from both home and work, for instance, or when you’re on the road.
Once you have your RSS reader set up, just click the relevant button at the top of this page to subscribe.
